A Mixed Bag

It’s a random thought kind of day…

Canadian Team of the Year: Women’s Soccer!!! Not surprising after their amazing performance in London this past summer. Christine Sinclair was also voted CBC’s Athlete of the Year (she had my vote, that’s for sure). It’s so wonderful to see the success and incredible influence of women in sport. See the related article here.

Lately, I am having a hard time stomaching much chicken and fish (and I don’t eat red meat), so this skinny veggie lasagna hit the spot as a viable dinner option. It is also man approved
Too much cheese? Never!!!

This is our only Christmas decoration for 2012- thanks, Mom! 😉

I’m a slacker, I know. Normally, we would have had a successful venture into a permitted forest area to cut down a massive pine tree (we always choose pine instead of fir) and I have the house fully embellished in holiday decor. However, my boxes of decorations are currently collecting dust on Prince Edward Island. Also, I am having a really difficult time even wrapping my head around the whole Christmas concept this year. After spending 28 years celebrating the holidays amongst snowmen and hot chocolate and fireplaces and skiing and family and friends, it’s quite a weird feeling to be walking around in sandals with the A/C blasting all day.
I was thinking about what I was doing this time last year. It was the night before the last day of school, aka the day of ultimate teacher exhaustion.  I stayed up until 1am making these cupcakes for my students (before the health food regulation kicked into play in January). I miss being able to do fun things like this for all of my ‘kids’.

The most disappointing purchase of the week: hand soap. I know this sounds trivial, but it has annoyed me enough to comment on it.

NOT recommended!

First of all, it’s completely my own fault for not reading the label. However, Palmer’s Cocoa Butter advertises their oil for pregnancy/stretch marks (which I was using before switching to a different brand), so I figured their other products would be pregnancy safe too. Wrong!

Ummm…5 types of parabens!? This probably isn’t good for anyone. I checked out some of their other products and it’s the same thing. Sure it’s sulfate free, but we’ve all heard about the paraben association with the estrogen hormone, possible cancer association, etc.  There is still a lot of research to be done, but I’ve been avoiding it for some time now. With all of the more natural options on the market, this is not a good choice.

I’m not much a t.v. person. I don’t have any weekly ‘shows’. I just never really had the free time for it, or I suppose just found other things to entertain myself with instead. Anyway, Adam and I started watching Dexter a few weeks ago. We flew through the first season and just started season two; I much prefer viewing the entire series, rather than waiting all week for a new episode. Despite Dexter’s sociopathic ways, I’m really enjoying this show and now understand why people have raved about it for years.

What do you do with produce that is going to go bad before you get to eat it?

I hate throwing away untouched fruits and veggies! I bought too many during my last grocery trip; we are going away for a few days and I don’t think I’ll be munching on these as a midnight snack this evening.

Banana + Zucchini = ???  I like banana bread and I also like zucchini bread (see here for a zucchini loaf I made). So, I think I will bake some sort of banana-zucchini loaf tonight to bring along with us. I will post a recipe if it turns out well!

As I said, we’re heading to the most southernly part of Queensland for the weekend to a town called Coolangatta! It’s close to Surfer’s Paradise on the Gold Coast, but supposed to be a little more relaxed and holiday-ish.

I’ll be bringing my laptop along, but may not get an opportunity to do much blogging until Sunday.

For many of you, it’s your last day of work before heading off on a much deserved holiday break. Enjoy every moment!

PS- Thanks for reading today. This marks my 100th post on Femme Fitale :)

  1. Hi Kelly – hope you are having a great time in Coolangatta and it is not too not – we are in Currarong at the moment – I'm sure it is a lot cooler here than up North. All these Aussie names are a bit strange:) I aviod parabens if at all possible – good call, especially if you are pregnant.

  6. Hi Robyn! Thanks for writing :)
It wasn't too hot of a weekend in Surfer's either, which is fine by me. I'm good without the extreme heat right now! I'll have to check out your Aussie blog adventures too! Merry Christmas.
