Case of the Gym Guilts

Last week I promised myself that I would go back to the gym at nighttime after Adam came home from work, as Thomas is still too young for their child care service (babies need to be 8 weeks old). Unfortunately, after coming down with a cold and an ear infection for which I’m taking antibiotics, I decided to postpone my ‘return to workouts’ regime one week. I take pride in the fact that once I say I’m going to do something, I do it.  I try to be consistently true to my word. That being said, I was inevitably disappointed in myself/the situation. I definitely could have sucked it up. It’s actually the first time in awhile that I’ve had Gym Guilt, and I’m not happy about it!

I hadn’t planned on going to the gym this past weekend anyway, as our good friends Vince & Jessica (and their kids) came to visit us for 3 days. They are moving to South Carolina after living here in Australia for a few years, so they stopped into Brisbane to spend some time with us and meet our new little guy. It was such a nice change of pace for us from the past couple of months. Lots of catching up, laughs, good food, a glass of wine here and there, and playing with the kids. Bubs also experienced his first dining out experience. We’ve been nervous to take him to restaurants, but thankfully he slept the entire time!

So, we waved goodbye to our wonderful friends this morning as they jetted off to New Zealand for one last stop, which meant it was back to normal routines around here. 
Cleaning and doing household chores isn’t as simple now that I have an almost 2-month old vying for my attention all day, so the Baby Bjorn has been amazing in helping me multitask! They retail for over $100, but I found mine on Gumtree (Australia’s Kijiji/Craig’s List) for $20, good as new! We also have an Ergo Baby for when Thomas is a big bigger.

It was then time to get out of the house for a run. Finally. I knew that tonight would be a write off in terms of going to the gym after Adam came home (who was I kidding?!), so I pulled myself together and got out for some exercise. It was a perfect day, weather wise, for my first run in 10 months.

Then onto some post-run smoothie creativity:

Raspberry-Watermelon-Cucumber Smoothie
Frozen Raspberries (1.5 cups)
Watermelon Cubes (Approximately ten 1″ cubes)
Cucumber (1/2, Peel On)
Mint Leaves (to taste)
Almond Milk (to taste)
Whey Protein (optional)
Nice and refreshing for a warm day! I used almond milk in this smoothie, but it probably isn’t necessary. You could always just add more watermelon to make it sweeter and more watered down, if need be. Speaking of almond milk, I also saw Oat Milk in the store today. I’ve never used it, and wondered if anyone else has? Is it any good? I noticed that it has more protein than almond milk, which is interesting! I came home and read up on it here, which gives a little information including how to make it yourself.
Well, it’s bath time for the little guy, then off to bed early for all of us around here! I may also need to do a few stretches before bed, as I’m already feeling sore from my jog today. A few of those muscles haven’t been used in some time! Regardless, I always love the feeling of being a little bit sore from exercise, and happy that I finally got back out there :)

  1. I used to use oat milk exclusively. I don't mind it for baking or even smoothies, but it doesn't taste very nice in coffee and sometimes goes a bit “chunky” looking!
