Cozy Comforts

How ironic that I would write a post about making time for fitness and have to skip boot camp the very next morning. I was totally ready to go, I swear! A mum’s gotta do what a mum’s gotta do, though: 100% attention to a fussy, sleepless, hungry little man.
After a night of no sleep for either of us, followed by an unruly morning, I strapped him into the car seat and headed to the nearest shopping mall, praying for a miracle. Within 10 minutes of cruising around in his stroller, Thomas was fast asleep. Now although I would have preferred this to happen at home so that I could nap too, at least he was finally getting some rest and the incessant crying had ceased. It was also nice to have some time to browse/shop, something which I haven’t been able to do much of lately. Reviewing some of yesterday’s purchases, I have to laugh. Someone is apparently in need of some relaxation…
Yoga Tote Bag
My poor mat has been flopping around in my trunk and becoming a disheveled mess. This simple bag does the trick. I also love the water bottle compartment!

House Coat
It’s been getting cool here lately, especially in the mornings and middle of the night when I have to get up with Thomas. I had two from Victoria’s Secret, but left them in Canada because I didn’t think I would need them in Australia. WRONG! Found this one at Cotton On

The pink is actually neon in real life, making this garment even more joyous to wear. However, I draw the line at taking loungewear selfies (#wrongwrongwrong), so the above website image will have to do.
Lush Bubble Bars
…for the bubble bath that I have penciled in this week. My friend gave me one as a gift awhile back, but I haven’t bought one for myself until now; they are a little pricey. I’ve seen some DIY tutorials on Pinterest, but let’s be serious…I barely have time to make nice meals let alone bath bubbles. Anyway, I splurged on two yesterday: “Dorothy” and “The Comforter”. They smell amazing and I am excited to try them soon!

Okay, so clearly the outcome of my shopping trip demonstrated an inner desire for the comforting things in life. Luckily, Adam was home early yesterday so I was able to make it to hot yoga class in the evening (much needed). It was a vinyasa flow class, so a bit more fast paced than I wanted, but it was still super invigorating and refreshing.
Speaking of comfort and relaxation, today was the perfect occasion for relaxing indoors (in my new house coat, naturally). I think I must be completely acclimatized to the Aussie weather, as I’ve been fairly cold lately! Stores here are currently stocked with all kinds of winter wear. Although I won’t be wearing parkas or fur lined boots any time soon like all of the mannequins in the storefront windows (I’m serious), I’ve definitely been sporting sweaters and pants more frequently as of late.

My Canadian/US friends will laugh and think I’m crazy. I am fully aware that kind of looks like a lovely spring forecast in the Great White North! However, when you’re used to 5 straight months of 30º+, you can certainly feel the temperature difference.
Besides a one-hour Body Attack class at the gym this afternoon, Bubs and I hung out at home all day, doing what we do best.

While he napped, I squeezed in some laundry, tidying up, emailing, and also put together a spicy chicken chilli in the slow cooker- the ultimate comfort food for a chilly day (no pun intended). I used this recipe (well…kind of). It calls for “1 package of taco seasoning” which definitely wasn’t going to happen. For example, check out the ingredients on an Old El Paso package:
Bleck! Now, I’m not a 100% clean eater or anything, but I just can’t imagine trying to make a relatively healthy dinner and throwing this into the mix. Instead, I used spices that I had on hand and replaced the recipe’s taco seasoning and all other called-for spices with this:

Spicy Homemade Taco Seasoning
*makes slightly more than you’d need to replace a taco seasoning packet

  • Chili Powder- 1 tbsp
  • Paprika- 1 tbsp
  • Cumin- 1 tbsp
  • Onion Powder- 1/2 tbsp
  • Garlic Powder- 1/4 tsp
  • Cayenne- 1/8 tsp
Shake it all up in a ziplock bag and it’s ready to go!

*It’s tough to judge “spiciness”, as it’s a pretty subjective concept. If you find you are sensitive to hot spices, I suggest taking out the cayenne or reducing the chili powder and paprika (just a tiny bit).
Much better. I also used organic beans and sauce without preservatives, and didn’t use any rice as I thought the consistency of the chilli was fine ‘as is’. Obviously threw a few taco chips, light sour cream, light shredded cheese in for good measure, though. Yum!
Well, we’re snuggling in for the night trying to warm up; the heat is actually on for the first time since we moved here! Stay warm, Aussie friends! If anything, it’s a good excuse for indulging in the comforts of life- warm food, warm baths, warm clothes, and warm workouts (to name a few).

Do you have a go-to comfort food?
What’s your favourite way to kick back and relax?

5 Thoughts on “Cozy Comforts

  1. Ooh I love your homemade taco mix recipe! I usually just haphazardly throw in spices (kind of dangerous when you can't taste what you're making but Jesse never complains haha) but I'm going to have to try out your version as I've never thought to add onion powder!

My favourite way to relax would have to be with a good book – and currently, in front of the fireplace with said book – my ultimate winter spot, haha.

Hope you have a lovely weekend!

  2. Very cool idea to make your own taco mix. I'll have to give that a try next time we have taco night!

  3. I wish I had a fireplace!!! I can't believe how cold the past few nights have been in Brissie!!!

  4. Yeah, with all of the strange ingredients in the packaged kind, it just makes more sense to use straight-up spices! :)

  5. Love the lulu lemon bag and the robe, you deserve to treat yourself and those were great purchases!
