Over Coffee [18.01.14]

…and water…and more coffee.

1. I am currently on day 5 of a week long paleo diet trial. Cassie Mendoza-Jones from Elevate Vitality in Sydney offered for me to sample one of her six meal plans. I’m making “clean eating” a priority in 2014, in search of more energy, less exhaustion, and supporting my overall health and well being. You know me, so of course I am going to require my fair share of treats along the way, but I really want to become more consistent and conscious of my food choices on a day-to-day basis. So, I figured I would take up this offer as a fun way to kick start the year and re-boot my eating habits. All of Cassie’s plans sounded amazing, but for some reason unbeknownst to me, I selected the paleo diet. Let’s just say that when Sunday rolls around, I wouldn’t be surprised if I converted to complete vegetarianism! The thought of eating another chicken breast makes me ill right now. I’m looking forward to sharing my Paleo Journal with you guys next week, including my daily thoughts about going paleo, my pros and cons (yes, I have some pros!!), and where I see myself making changes in my regular diet once the plan is over. Stay tuned, and eat a loaf of bread and some yogurt for me, would ya?

2. Yeee-Haw!!! If you know me, you also know I have a soft spot for country music. I saw Keith Urban in Calgary a few years ago and it was the best concert I’ve even been to. I was determined to score tickets to his show in Brisbane this June; it might be my only chance to ever see him play in his hometown venue! Little story for you:

  • It was 8:59am. Thomas was screaming behind me, I was late for bootcamp, but my finger was on repeat screen-refresh mode.Determination at its finest.
  • The clock struck 9:00. Go Go Go!
  • Decent lower bowl seats. Nice. Insert credit card info. Click submit and show me the tickets, baby! All smiles.
  • “Error: You are being re-directed”. WHAAAT!!!??! Panic mode.
  • Attempt to purchase tickets all over again. “All tickets have been allocated.” Tears drops.

I couldn’t believe my luck. What are the chances? I didn’t even think Aussies liked Keith Urban that much! As I sat staring aimlessly at the screen, I decided to refresh the page. And refresh. Aaaand refresh. I think I did this about 20 times. Somewhat like an annoyed reaction to when your screen freezes and you sit there clicking your mouse repeatedly. All of a sudden, after a couple dozen inexplicable clicks, a second concert opened up that hadn’t been previously advertised. One minute later I was purchasing two amazing floor seats right beside the stage! Needless to say, I am very excited. I guess everything happens for a reason! My cowgirl boots are ready. See ya soon, Keithy, in high-five proximity.

My last encounter with Mr. Urban in 2009. Been way too long!

3. Just a reminder that if you are interested in ordering anything from the beautiful company, Fivemore, you still have a couple of weeks left to use the Femme Fitale discount code!

4. I was so touched by all of the messages in the comments, email, texts, and on Facebook regarding my feelings after the departure of our holiday visitors. It’s certainly difficult sometimes to live so far away from home. Luckily, we have Adam’s parents coming for a visit soon, followed by my parents in April! They just booked their tickets this week! Dad hasn’t visited Australia, and Mom was only here when Thomas was a newborn, so she really didn’t get to see too much besides the inside walls of our house. My aunt and uncle are also stopping into Brisbane for a few days in March as part of their Australia tour. I am so happy to have more family time in the near future!

5. Speaking of the near future…

It’s official. Less than a month until we have a 1 year old. How that happened so quickly, I do not know. I’m sure I’ll bombard the blog with a Thomas birthday post in a few weeks’ time, but seriously…where did this year go?! And my teeny tiny baby? (as I type this, he’s intently listening to a “Where’s Spot?” story with Adam, lifting the flaps, and turning the pages on his own…sniff sniff)

6. You may have come across this article before -> Hungry Planet: What The World Eats. I saw it again this week on my Facebook newsfeed, and thought I would share just in case you haven’t seen it. Although I’ll say they have obviously generalized the grocery orders for some of the countries, I do think this anthropological look at weekly eats is pretty interesting!

7. Aussie phrase I’ve heard about 10 times this week: “Get Amongst It!”. Kind of like,”get in there and give it all you’ve got!” Not too sure how I feel about this one, guys! I have been compiling a list of my fave Aussie Expressions on my iPhone over the past year, and I feel like I’m going to have to share them with you verrrry soon.

8. I picked up a couple of workout tops this week from Lorna Jane (first shirts I’ve ever purchased there…not bad, not bad). I loved the shopping bag and posted this pic to Instagram. I know that my day is always better when I’ve incorporated the following:

9. This weekend we are finally booking a trip to New Zealand! It’s on our travel bucket list, so we decided to take the plunge and head there this March. We decided on the South Island and are going to do a self-drive tour. It’s a bit adventurous to do with a 1 year old, but we’re of the mindset that if we want to see and do anything while living on this side of the Earth, then we just have to go for it! So far on my list: a wine tour, visiting glow worm caves, and taking in the sights at Milford Sound. If you have any suggestions for things to see and do on the South Island, I’d love to hear them!

10. I’m very excited about a new partnership I have with Fitness First over the next 5 months or so. Australian friends…make sure to keep Femme Fitale on your blogroll, subscribe in the sidebar, or like the Facebook page to stay in the loop {side note: if you were an email subscriber in the past, I had to reset the subscription method when I transferred to a self-hosted site, so be sure to re-add your email}.

We will be hosting a really great competition beginning next week for Australian residents only, and I don’t want you to miss out in the fun. And of course, for all you amazing international friends & readers…seeing as though I AM from across the pond, I will always think of you guys when presented with any giveaway opportunities, don’t you worry. <3

11. Between the beginning of this post and now, I caved and ate coconut yogurt with chocolate chips for dessert. Then cereal. Take that, caveman diet.

12. I went to bed at 9pm last night. Fridays are pretty wild around here!

That’s what time my alarm sounded yesterday, summoning me to the gym. I had to teach teach a very early Body Attack, and actually just got home from another one this morning (a littler later, but still early for a Saturday). As I wrote on a Facebook update, it’s tough to get up so early for a workout, but it certainly feels awesome to start the day with exercise.

For once we don’t have any specific plans or commitments this weekend besides teaching that one class. Just going to take things as they come, and I’m pretty darn happy about it. Wishing you a fabulous weekend!

4 Thoughts on “Over Coffee [18.01.14]

  1. Just when I was harking on about Fitness First….Can’t wait to see what you have lined up! Also intrigued about how you find the Paleo trial- I’m thinking of doing whole30!

Stoked that you managed to score those tickets- You definitely assumed correctly about him and Australia not correlating too strongly, but since his stint on the Voice AU and American Idol it seems like perceptions have changed!

Milford Sound = amazing. Heck, the whole south Island is amazing. Be sure to pack a TONNE of warm clothing- even for that time. Also, hope you all enjoy scenery- and loads of it. lol. Bring lots of in car entertainment. Oh, also order a latte at a standard cafe- their serving cups are the size of a soup bowl.

    Have a great Sunday :)

  2. Oh I have to give you credit, I don’t think I could handle a paleo diet – but then that’s also because I’m already so limited in what I CAN eat.

Thomas is getting so big – and so handsome! He’s totally going to be a ladies man, Kelly! Watch out ;P

Funnily enough, there’s a guy at our church that comes up with a new Aussie saying for Jesse every week. This week he said “Aye, Jesse – you’re the last cab of the rank mate!” because we were one of the last to leave the church and Jesse was like “huh? what?” then I had to explain he meant we were the last to leave 😛

Jesse and I both desperately want to go to New Zealand – me for the scenery and Jesse because he wants to do the Lord of the Rings/Hobbit tours lolol.

And how exciting about the partnership with Fitness First! Go girl!!

  3. Screw the caveman diet. Cavemen didn’t have half the stuff that’s allowed on the paleo diet anyway. In fact, screw diets. You already look fantastic :)

  4. PS notice the Canadians favourite meal is polar bear in the Hungry Planet? lol
